Tips for Moms: God's Mercy in the Messiness of Motherhood

by Sandy Kay Slawson Author Donna Wichelman, Tips for Moms, Coming Soon—The Woman, and Coming in April—Love on a Half Shell

If you saw my quick update last week, you know I have another devotional out with MomQ's—Tips for Moms, which I contribute to twice yearly. As opposed to my fictional stories, my devotionals basically place me in a glass house for the benefit of others. If I've learned anything, it's that pride gets us nowhere, and if we need help, it's out there. We simply have to humble ourselves and learn from what others have learned before us. God's Mercy in the Messiness of Motherhood is no different. As one reader commented, "Whether we have kids in the house or not, messes and chaos surround us." How true is that? Struggles and stress are part of the human condition, and we all require help or a shoulder to cry on sometimes.

I'm thankful for those who have reached out already, and hopefully this devotional will continue to offer encouragement to those of us whose homes do not run like "well-oiled machines."

The Woman (a short story) Author Donna Wichelman, Tips for Moms, Coming Soon—The Woman, and Coming in April—Love on a Half ShellComing Soon—The Woma

A person with a cart and dog walks on a wet street lined with shops and streetlights. Text: "Sandy Kay Slawson. The Woman: A Short Story."

From time to time, a different kind of story demands to be written. This Christian Women's Fiction, although not my usual genre, is one such story. In The Woman, Jackie Cassen's story, spoke to me and isn't far from how I've felt many times. May we always have our eyes open to the needs of others and a ready heart to do God's will.

Jackie Cassen is the typical middle-class mom with an overwhelmed life. When the regular presence of a homeless woman at her grocery store entrance sets her on edge, and her overabundance of stuff suffocates her, she does the one thing that makes sense—she listens for that Still, Small Voice and finds meaning and a clear solution to her mental, emotional, and spiritual crisis.
