Book Review of Leading Philippi: Epaphroditus’ Story

(Paul’s Patrons Book 1)

by Author Jenifer Jennings (Christian Historical Romance/Christian Fiction)

Leading Philippi is Biblical fiction at its best. While it sucks the readers back into biblical times, conveying the sights, smells, sounds, and dangers of AD 37, Paphos, Cyprus, especially for Christians, the language of the story is easy to read and understand.

Epaphroditus has lived his life frightened of an early demise because of a prophecy Aphrodite’s priestess spoke over him as a child. This fear has kept him close to home despite his merchant father’s desire for him to follow in his footsteps at sea. At times, it appears Epaphroditus’ nightmares might come to fruition, but when his friend Luke introduces him to Paul, who is sharing the story of Jesus the Nazarene, will his faith in Aphrodite be challenged? Will he realize a god of stone really can’t hear his prayers for protection or control his destiny?

When Epaphroditus is met with multiple tragedies, will he be the man of faith his family needs? His community needs? A man whose faith turns from a statue to the God of all creation? And will this faith and encouragement of his loved ones, and Paul himself, finally break the chains of fear once and for all?

This story is full of highs, lows, and highs again. Definitely worth the read, and I highly recommend this book!

Interview with Spark Flash Fiction Magazine (Christian Historical Romance/Christian Fiction)

After A Ruby Red Perspective was first published in Spark Flash Fiction Magazine, Author Jennifer Purcell of Spark interviewed me for their YouTube channel. We discuss the inspiration for the story and other tidbits you may enjoy!

Question of the Month (Christian Historical Romance/Christian Fiction)

My flash, short, and full-length novels are set in a variety of eras, from the 18th century to the 20th century. There are aspects of each that are fascinating, and we can learn much from those who've gone before us, and the struggles they dealt with daily.

My question for you is: If you could go back in time, what time period would you most want to visit? Bonus points if you tell me why! 😉

Quick Publishing Update (Christian Historical Romance/Christian Fiction)

Last time, I told you I'm awaiting responses from two publishing houses concerning my debut novel, Hope for Charity, which is in the hands of their acquisitions committees. I'm still waiting to hear from them. But last week, I received an email about a query I sent out almost a year ago that I'd forgotten about. The email didn't mention my novel at all, but only asked questions about whether my platform had grown since I queried. They want to know my numbers compared to when I contacted them. My platform has doubled, but that doesn't mean the total will be enough. I'm preparing my response and hope to send it soon. If I receive word from any of these houses, you'll be among the first to know whether its good news or bad. I appreciate any prayers you want to say on my behalf. If you aren't familiar with the term "platform" in this case, please ask your questions in the comments below.

If you're already a subscriber, or become a subscriber today, let me know in the comments below if you want the link to the ebook when it's available. It's my gift to you. There's no cost to subscribe or to receive the story. Sharing this blog would be a great thank you, though not required.

Excellent newsletter/blog, Sandy! I'm in awe you received a follow-up of a query almost a year later! Regardless of their comment about platform, your story obviously interested them, or they wouldn't have held it for even a few days. Or hours, for that matter! As for your question: I would choose to go to my favorite era and location. My ancestral home is England although I don't know the precise location. The era is the first quarter of the 19th century, also known as the Regency era. That era was interesting in many ways: the beginning of the industrial revolution, the beginning of the end of child labor, and the official--if not actual--end of slavery in the United Kingdom. Another…

Very encouraging, Peggy! I appreciate you! I love the Regency era, too. It's truly a treasure trove for a writer. I know you've written some stories from that time period. Remind me of those titles, if you will. I'm honored you saved my Spark's story! That was really nice to hear.

Sandy, good writing is the most important element in a query or proposal, but agents still focus on our platform. It's very hard to grow a platform when your work's not out there, so it becomes a "chicken and egg" thing. Very frustrating. Hang in there. I'm pulling for you!

True, the writing has to be good, but without the platform, many places won't even look at the writing. Definitely frustrating. But I'll keep pushing forward and trust in God's timing. Appreciate the encouragement!
